Nigerian actor Yemi Solade has voiced his support for music artist Davido following backlash over his performance at the birthday celebration of London-based clergyman, Pastor Tobi Adegboyega.
This criticism, led by Ossai Ovie Success, the Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Delta State Governor, arose after Davido’s appearance at the event, which some felt was inappropriate for a pastoral setting.
Ossai, expressing his disappointment on social media, advised Pastor Tobi to seek forgiveness and suggested that he should have invited gospel artists instead.
He described the event as “an embarrassment to the Gospel,” noting that a pastor’s birthday celebration should align with pastoral values, which he felt were absent during Davido’s performance.
In response, Yemi Solade questioned Ossai’s stance, asking in the comment section of a blog post, “Is DAVID ADELEKE not a CHILD OF GOD and a FELLOW CHRISTIAN?” By this, Solade emphasized that Davido, like any other Christian, is also a child of God, implying that his presence at a Christian gathering should not be contentious.
The debate has sparked wider conversations on social media about inclusivity, the role of secular musicians in religious settings, and the evolving definitions of what constitutes appropriate celebrations for religious leaders.
