LAGOS, NIGERIA – Former PDP Deputy National Chairman, Bode George, has called on Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to take action against the ongoing abuse, extortion, and physical mistreatment of traders by state officials and security agents.
In an open letter, George expressed shock and disappointment over the harsh treatment of these traders, describing it as “a disgraceful display of inhumanity” that calls for urgent reform.
George condemned the severe conditions traders endure, including routine harassment and excessive levies. “Lagos is known as the Centre of Excellence,” he wrote, “yet these traders endure treatment that is anything but excellent.”
He highlighted that traders are also frequently subjected to extortion by local authorities and street gangs, which only adds to their daily struggles.
Noting that many traders resort to street vending due to unaffordable market shop fees—some exceeding ₦1 million—George criticized the inhumane treatment of these individuals.
He argued that it’s unethical to treat hardworking street traders “like bandits or terrorists” and urged the government to respect their dignity. “These traders are not criminals. They deserve respect as they try to make an honest living,” he added.
George recommended that the Sanwo-Olu administration adopt humane solutions for regulating street trading, such as skill acquisition programs and regulated systems that acknowledge the traders’ contributions.
He argued that confiscating goods and detaining traders worsens their struggles, especially for those supporting families or funding education.
George condemned the use of Black Maria trucks—typically used for hardened criminals—to detain street traders. He described this treatment as unjust, calling it a “triple tragedy” that should be addressed with compassion.
He argued that while traders work hard to make ends meet, loiterers and miscreants roam freely without repercussion.
In closing, George called for an end to the misuse of state power against traders and urged the Lagos administration to adopt a compassionate approach that aligns with global human rights standards.
He appealed to Governor Sanwo-Olu to protect the dignity of all citizens, especially those who contribute to the economy despite difficult circumstances.
