BY ABU-SATAR HAMED

ABUJA, FCT, NIGERIA – Senator Otunba Gbenga Daniel (OGD) has provided an overview of his service to the Ogun East Senatorial District since his election on February 25, 2023, and his swearing-in on June 13, 2023.

Reflecting on his legislative journey, OGD emphasized the fundamental roles of a modern legislator – lawmaking, oversight, and representation – stressing that his work has been driven by these core responsibilities.

Within the first year of his tenure, Senator Daniel submitted 11 bills and one motion to the Senate’s Rules and Business Committee. Several of these legislative proposals have passed the second reading, signaling progress in his lawmaking efforts.

Among the most notable bills are – the South West Development Commission Bill, aimed at establishing a commission for regional development; the Federal College of Aviation Technology Bill, which seeks to expand educational opportunities in the aviation sector and the Terminal Illness Trust Fund Bill, designed to provide support for individuals battling terminal illnesses.

One of Senator Daniel’s key motions, moved on July 5, 2023, addressed the urgent need to tackle flooding issues in Sagamu and Ijebu, two significant areas within Ogun East.

The motion triggered an intervention from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), which visited the affected regions and provided much-needed palliative materials to help mitigate the impact of the floods on residents.

In his oversight role, Senator Daniel has been actively involved in 15 Standing Committees. These committees are integral to the Senate’s regulatory functions and investigations into national matters.

His most prominent committee assignments include – Chairman of the Senate Committee on Navy, where he oversees legislative duties related to the Nigerian Navy and Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Identity & Population, contributing to critical discussions around national identity and population management.

Senator Daniel has prioritized effective representation by establishing fully operational Constituency Offices in Abuja and Sagamu. These offices serve as points of communication and engagement between the Senator and his constituents.

To ensure constant interaction with the people, he has appointed special advisers, constituency supervisors, and coordinators.

Through these offices, OGD has facilitated employment opportunities for his constituents in several federal ministries, departments, and parastatals. These include placements within the Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Police Force, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.

Senator Daniel’s service extends beyond legislation, as he has initiated numerous community development projects.

These include – renovation of Otunba Gbenga Daniel Model School in Sagamu and Omu Ajose Comprehensive High School in Odogbolu, enhancing the infrastructure of educational institutions and installation of motorised boreholes in Ijebu Ode and Abobi, Ago Iwoye, providing clean water to communities.

Also, OGD has organized medical outreach programmes, distributed fertilizers, and conducted training and empowerment programmes for farmers and youths, further demonstrating his commitment to the welfare of his people.

Senator Otunba Gbenga Daniel remains committed to setting a benchmark for impactful governance, with a focus on improving the lives of the people of Ogun East Senatorial District.

His combination of legislative duties and community-driven initiatives reflects his dedication to fostering meaningful change in the district.

“And we’ve not even started,” OGD concluded, signaling that more is yet to come in his journey to serve the people of Ogun East.
