LISA TOWN, IFO LG, OGUN STATE, NIGERIA – The Olu of Lisa Kingdom, Oba Najeemdeen Oladele Odugbemi, has praised Hon. Ibrahim Ayokunle Isiaka for sponsoring a crucial bill aimed at addressing the long-overdue development of roads leading to Lisa town.
The bill, presented in the House of Representatives, calls for immediate road construction, dredging, and channelization around Alamo and Awela bridges, which connect Ijoko to Lisa town through Oyero.
In his reaction to the bill, Oba Odugbemi expressed deep appreciation for Hon. Isiaka’s courage in bringing attention to the deplorable conditions of the roads.
As a representative of the Ifo/Ewekoro Federal Constituency, Isiaka took the initiative to highlight the sufferings of the local residents, many of whom rely on these neglected routes for transportation.
The traditional ruler urged Hon. Isiaka to remain diligent in following through on the bill, ensuring it gains full support and leads to implementation once passed into law.
He emphasized that the passage of the bill would alleviate the hardships faced by the people of Lisa and the surrounding communities.
Oba Odugbemi also took the opportunity to call on Senator Shuaib Salis, the representative of Ogun Central Senatorial District, to replicate the effort in the Senate.
The Oba referenced a promise made by Senator Salis during a visit to Oyero town, where he led a delegation of senators to the burial service of late Senator Kunle Oyero.
During the visit, Senator Salis had assured the community that he would raise the issue of the dilapidated roads in the Senate and had already initiated the establishment of an ICT center in honor of the late Senator.
The Olu of Lisa hopes that Senator Salis will sponsor a bill in the Senate to address the reconstruction of the Ijoko-Oyero-Oluke-Lisa road, a crucial project that would ease the daily transportation struggles faced by the residents.
Hon. Ibrahim Isiaka’s recent bill, sponsored last week in the House of Representatives, emphasizes the need to rehabilitate the roads and bridges leading to Lisa town.
This area holds historical significance as the site of the 2005 Bellview Boeing 737-200 crash, which claimed the lives of 117 passengers en route from Lagos to Abuja. Isiaka recounted the tragic event, where the aircraft nose-dived and crashed near Lisa town shortly after takeoff, leaving a lasting impact on the community.
Isiaka highlighted that families of the deceased have struggled to visit the crash site due to the terrible state of the roads and the collapse of the Alamo and Awela bridges, worsened by floods and erosion. Many of the families have been unable to lay wreaths or offer prayers due to the impassable routes.
Hon. Isiaka’s bill also proposes the establishment of a memorial fund to support the families of the crash victims, aiding their travel to the site. It calls for sustainable infrastructure development, urging the federal government to prioritize road maintenance and facilitate ease of access for visitors to the memorial site.
The bill further encourages donations and contributions to alleviate the financial burdens faced by the victims’ families. Isiaka stressed that this effort serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges caused by the tragic event and the need for government action to address infrastructural deficits in the region.
The bill also urges the Ecological Project Office, under the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), to initiate immediate roadworks and improvements around the Alamo and Awela rivers.
The intention is to restore access to the crash site, allowing families to pay their respects regularly without facing the current transportation challenges.
Also, Hon. Isiaka’s bill mandates the House committees on Ecological Fund, Appropriations, and Aviation to include provisions for these infrastructure projects in the 2025 budget estimates, ensuring that the necessary funds are allocated to resolve the road issues.
Following its presentation, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, referred the bill to the appropriate committees for further legislative action, marking a significant step toward addressing the infrastructural needs of Lisa town and its surrounding areas.
