ABUJA, FCT, NIGERIA – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described the newly sworn-in Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun, as a leader possessing the qualities the Nigerian judiciary needs at this time.
Tinubu stated, “I have no doubt that you will set the pace for others to follow.” He expressed this sentiment during the swearing-in ceremony on September 30, 2024, where Justice Kekere-Ekun officially became the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria.
The President emphasized his administration’s dedication to maintaining the independence and integrity of the judiciary. He remarked, “The judiciary is an important pillar constituting the tripod that holds our constitutional democracy. The Nigerian judiciary has, at various times in history, proven to be the moderating force ensuring everyone remains in check.”
“Your role as the last hope of the common man sustains our people’s confidence in democracy,” he continued, underscoring the judiciary’s vital function as an arbiter for those seeking redress. He stressed that it is essential for the judiciary to remain truly independent.
“It is my administration’s total commitment to preserve the sanctity of the judiciary,” Tinubu stated. He acknowledged that while there are reasons for interaction between the branches of government, there must be a clear distinction between their roles. “Under my watch, the government will remain mindful of the clear line demarcating the two of us.”
“We will never interfere or abuse the relationship between us as separate organs of government in our democracy,” he affirmed. “This is important for sustaining our constitutional democracy.”
Tinubu concluded by stating, “The Nigerian judiciary needs a leader with these qualities at this time, and I have no doubt that you will set the pace for others to follow.” He also celebrated the significance of the day, recognizing the judiciary as a self-evolving institution. “I specifically congratulate Nigerian women; any girl child can dream big and have her dreams come true. It is worth celebrating.”
