LAGOS, NIGERIA – The Islamic music community mourns the loss of Alhaja Rukayat Gawat-Oyefeso, a beloved singer whose death was confirmed early on Tuesday, September 24, 2024.
Her brother, Jubril Gawat, Senior Special Assistant on New Media to Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, shared the news via Twitter now X, quoting, “Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return” (Q 2 V 156).
Gboyega Akosile, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Sanwo-Olu, also expressed his sorrow, stating, “Ina lillahi waina ilaehi rajiun. May the Almighty Allah console the family of my dear brothers @Mr_JAGs @tfk_gawat on the demise of our beloved sister, Rukayat.
“May Aljannah firdaus be her permanent home. May Allah grant you the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.”
Rukayat was the daughter of the well-known broadcaster and Islamic presenter, Alhaji Rasaq Aremu Gawat, who has been missing for over a decade, and his mysterious disappearance remains unsolved.
The disappearance of Aremu Gawat on July 6, 2012, sent shockwaves through the nation, leaving family and fans in distress and uncertainty.
In a 2019 interview, Rukayat stated her dedication to her faith, affirming she would rather quit music than transition to secular genres.
Rukayat Gawat’s body will be laid to rest later today, in accordance with Islamic rites.
