BENIN, EDO STATE, NIGERIA – Ambruse Vanzekin, a former Nigerian goalkeeper, has resigned from his position as goalkeeper trainer at Bendel Insurance, citing unfair treatment and poor compensation.
Despite his contributions and achievements, including winning a silver medal at the 2008 Olympics, Vanzekin revealed he had been earning a modest N75,000 (less than $100) per month for the past three years.
Vanzekin, who had been with Bendel Insurance for four seasons, expressed frustration over his salary, especially when compared to other staff members reportedly earning between N300,000 to N400,000. Feeling undervalued and underpaid, he submitted his resignation and has not returned to training since.
Vanzekin’s situation has drawn attention to the wider issue of underpayment in Nigerian football, particularly for former players who have achieved significant success.
Despite his silver medal from the 2008 Olympics, his compensation at Bendel Insurance failed to reflect his experience and contributions to the sport.
