2nd Raheem Adisa Oloyo Annual Memorial Public Lecture: Harnessing Emerging Technologies To Combat Insecurity In Nigeria (+photos)

ILARO-YEWA, OGUN STATE, NIGERIA – The Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro (FPI) hosted the 2nd Raheem Adisa Oloyo Annual Memorial Public Lecture on August 14, 2024 at the Raheem Oloyo International Conference Centre,

The event which paid tribute to the late Dr. Raheem Adisa Oloyo, a revered former Rector of the institution was attended by students, faculty, and distinguished guests, celebrating Dr. Oloyo’s legacy of compassion, humility, and dedication to public service.

Dr. Mikhail Aremu Akinde, the current Rector of FPI kick-started the event with heartfelt tributes to Dr. Oloyo, praising his unwavering commitment to education and community development.

He described Oloyo as a figure of integrity and kindness, whose actions consistently prioritized others’ well-being.

Engr. (Dr.) Yahaya M. Bande, Chairman of the occasion and former Rector of Federal Polytechnic, Kaura Namoda, Zamfara State, also eulogized Dr. Oloyo for his significant contributions to humanity’s development.

Dr. Okunade Olanrewaju Isiaka, Chief Lecturer at The Polytechnic, Ibadan, delivered the guest lecture titled, “Utilizing Emerging Technologies to Combat Insecurity in Nigeria”, addressing the nation’s escalating security challenges, including insurgencies, banditry, and cyber threats.

He emphasized the need for innovative solutions beyond traditional methods. Dr. Okunade provided a comprehensive overview of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, drones, and blockchain.

Dr. Okunade detailed how AI could aid in predictive analytics, machine learning in data analysis, drones in real-time surveillance, and block-chain in securing data integrity.

A panel discussion included former Rectors of FPI, who shared their perspectives on Dr. Oloyo’s impact and the role of education in technological innovation.

Arc. Olusegun Aluko PhD, a former Rector and close associate of Dr. Oloyo, reflected on their shared vision of using education to address societal issues, continuing to inspire the institution.

The lecture concluded with a question-and-answer session, engaging students and attendees in a discussion about leveraging technology to address Nigeria’s security challenges.

Dr. Akinde expressed gratitude to Engr. (Dr.) Bande, Dr. Okunade, and all contributors at the event.

A scholarship award which was put together by friends of the late Dr. Raheem Oloyo was presented to two indigents students of the institution.

According to Mr. Ajibode, the award is their own contribution to the remembrance of their idol and boss.

Mrs. Mrs. A. F. Babatola, the FPI Registrar gave vote of thanks, highlighting Dr. Oloyo’s enduring legacy of compassion and humility. She thanked the chairman, guest lecturer, Dr. Oloyo’s family, and all dignitaries for their presence and contributions.

The event was anchored by a distinguished team from the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro. Sola Abiala, the Deputy Registrar of Public Relations, was joined by Dr. Tajudeen Jimoh, Dr. (Mrs.) Bunmi Banjo, and Mr. Biodun Abioye. All four are lecturers and members of the institution’s esteemed Team of Orators.

The 2nd Raheem Adisa Oloyo Annual Memorial Public Lecture honored Dr. Oloyo’s memory while addressing Nigeria’s pressing security issues through technology and innovation.

The event served as both a tribute to a cherished leader and a call to action for a safer and more secure future.
