Dr. Sodimu Commends Gov. Abiodun For Substantial Support In Health, Education Sectors (+photos)

ILARO-YEWA, OGUN STATE, NIGERIA – Dr. Jeminat Omotade Sodimu, Provost of the Ogun State College of Nursing Sciences, has praised Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun CON, for his substantial contributions to both the health and education sectors in Ogun State.

This acknowledgment was made during the 2023/24 Academic Session Matriculation and Capping Ceremony for Student Nurses and Midwives at the Ilaro Campus on August 13, 2024.

Dr. Sodimu also extended her commendations to the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, for her commitment to delivering affordable healthcare in Ogun State.

She lauded both leaders for their roles in advancing the state’s healthcare and educational systems, noting that their supports has secured a lasting legacy in the history of nursing education in Ogun State.

Dr. Sodimu emphasized that nursing is not just a career, but a calling that requires deep compassion, dedication, and commitment to the well-being of others.

She described nursing as a profession that demands both knowledge and a genuine desire to make a positive impact on individuals and communities.

Addressing the matriculants, Dr. Sodimu highlighted that the path of nursing is filled with challenges and hurdles that test patience, resilience, and determination.

She urged students to view these challenges as opportunities for growth and to embrace both the joys and sorrows inherent in the profession.

Dr. Sodimu further stressed that nurses are vital in bridging the gap between patients and their healthcare needs.

She urged the new student nurses to remember their role as advocates for patient rights, emphasizing the importance of dignity, respect, and empathy in their work.

Dr. Sodimu advised the students to embrace lifelong learning and stay updated with advances in healthcare.

She emphasized that excellence in nursing requires ongoing education and a commitment to expanding knowledge and skills.

Dr. Sodimu expressed profound gratitude to Oba Kehinde Olugbenle MFR, the Olu of Ilaro & Paramount Ruler of Yewaland, the Yewa Descendants Union of North America (YDUNA), and the Yewa People Development Council (YDPC) for their generous donations to the institution.

She highlighted how these contributions enhance the educational quality at the College of Nursing Ilaro-Yewa.

The Provost encouraged the matriculants to celebrate diversity among their peers and work collaboratively to provide the highest quality of care.

She congratulated them on their choice of a challenging and rewarding profession, urging them to approach their journey with open hearts and minds.

Dr. Sodimu also acknowledged the support and sacrifices of the parents of the matriculants, expressing appreciation for their contributions to their children’s education and wellbeing.

Dr. Sodimu officially admitted the 78 matriculants (69 females and 9 males) as student nurses, and presided over the capping ceremony conducted by officials from various campuses.

The event also recognized outstanding students for their achievements during their training. The include Aretola Odunayo as Most Well-Behaved, Omofoyewa John for Best in Practical and Anatomy, Soluade Oluwafunmilayo as Best in Foundational Nursing and Second Overall Best, and Aleshe Oluwagbotemi as Second Overall Best. Omofoyewa John was also named Overall Best Student.

The ceremony was attended by prominent figures, including representatives of Oba Kehinde Olugbenle – Chief (Mrs.) Yemisi Oloyo, Iya Ewe of Ilaro-Yewa; Chief (Mrs.) Adunni Onifade, Otun Iya Ewe of Ilaro-Yewa and Chief (Elhadj) Abu-Satar Idowu Hamed, Otun Baaroyin of Ilaro-Yewa.

Others were Dr. (Mrs.) Sodimu J.O. – Provost, Ogun State College of Nursing Sciences; Mr. Oluremi – Registrar, Ogun State College of Nursing Sciences; Mr. Bamidele – Bursar, Ogun State College of Nursing Sciences; Mrs. Ajayi – Director of School, School of Midwifery, Abeokuta and Mrs. Dele Alonge – Director of School, Ogun State College of Nursing Science, Abeokuta Campus.

Also at the event were Mrs. Awosanya – Director of School, Ogun State College of Nursing Science, Ijebu-Ode Campus; Mrs. Onasile – Director of School, School of Midwifery, Ijebu-Ode; Mrs. Ogunleye – Director of School, Ogun State College of Nursing Science, Ilaro Campus; CNO Fasure – Head of Unit, Outpatient Department, State Hospital Ilaro-Yewa, (represented the Medical Director and Apex Nurse).

The programme was expertly anchored by Nurse Ayinde Abiodun Rafiu, a distinguished graduate and current Junior Tutor at the Ilaro Campus.
