Oba Olugbenle Commends Abiodun, Nurses’ Contributions In Community Development, Healthcare Professionals (+photos)

ILARO-YEWA, OGUN STATE, NIGERIA – Oba (Dr.) Kehinde Gbadewole Olugbenle MFR, the Olu of Ilaro & Paramount Ruler of Yewaland, has expressed his gratitude towards Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun CON, and Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, for their unwavering support in advancing healthcare and education in Ogun State.

Oba Olugbenle stated this at the 2023/24 Academic Session Matriculation and Capping Ceremony for Student Nurses and Midwives at the Ogun State College of Nursing Sciences, Ilaro Campus on August 13, 2024.

Represented by Chief (Mrs.) Yemisis Oloyo, the Iya Ewe of Ilaro-Yewa, Oba Olugbenle, extended his thanks to Governor Abiodun for his commitment to health promotion, comfort provision, and hope delivery throughout the state.

Oba Olugbenle underscored the significance of education and healthcare and praised the crucial role of nurses in community development. He described the ceremony as a milestone for the students starting their careers in healthcare.

Oba Olugbenle who is the current Chairman of the Ogun State Council of Obas,  expressed immense pride in the student nurses for their dedication and commitment to service. He noted, “As you don the nursing cap, you are not just embracing a profession but a tradition of compassion and excellence.”

Oba Olugbenle highlighted the nursing cap as a symbol of integrity, empathy, and professionalism.

He reminded the students of the challenges they would face and the rewards of their profession, urging them to uphold the values of their calling.

The Oba also recognized the efforts of the administration, faculty, and staff of the Ogun State College of Nursing Sciences, Ilaro, for their dedication to preparing students for future healthcare challenges.

He commended parents and guardians for their support and encouraged the students to embody the values of nursing.

In her speech, Dr. Jeminat Omotade Sodimu, Provost of the Ogun State College of Nursing Sciences, described nursing as a calling requiring compassion and dedication.

She praised the support from Ogun State leaders and expressed gratitude for contributions from Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, the Yewa Descendants Union of North America (YDUNA), and the Yewa People Development Council (YDPC) to the college.

Dr. Sodimu urged the matriculating students to embrace diversity and work towards providing high-quality care.

She congratulated them on their choice of profession and encouraged them to approach their studies with an open mind and heart.

Mrs. Ogunleye Comfort Adebisi, Director of the School of Nursing Sciences, Ilaro Campus, congratulated the matriculants and wished them success in their studies.

She also welcomed guests, parents, and guardians to the event, wishing them a safe journey home.

Dr. Sodimu officially admitted the 78 matriculants (69 females and 9 males) as student nurses, and capping was conducted by selected officials from various campuses.

The ceremony honoured outstanding students, including Aretola Odunayo as Most Well-Behaved, Omofoyewa John for Best in Practical and Anatomy, Soluade Oluwafunmilayo as Best in Foundational Nursing and Second Overall Best, and Aleshe Oluwagbotemi as Second Overall Best. Omofoyewa John was also named Overall Best Student.

The event was graced by key figures including representatives of Oba Olugbenle – Chief (Mrs.) Yemisi Oloyo, Iya Ewe of Ilaro-Yewa; Chief (Mrs.) Adunni Onifade, Otun Iya Ewe of Ilaro-Yewa and Chief (Elhadj) Abu-Satar Idowu Hamed, Otun Baaroyin of Ilaro-Yewa

Also at the event were Mrs. Awosanya – Director of School, Ogun State College of Nursing Science, Ijebu-Ode Campus; Mrs. Onasile – Director of School, School of Midwifery, Ijebu-Ode; Mrs. Ogunleye – Director of School, Ogun State College of Nursing Science, Ilaro Campus; CNO Fasure – Head of Unit, Outpatient Department, State Hospital, Ilaro-Yewa, (represented the Medical Director and Apex Nurse).

The programme was skillfully anchored by Nurse Ayinde Abiodun Rafiu, a distinguished graduate and current Junior Tutor at Ogun State College of Nursing Sciences, Ilaro Campus, who also presented an award to Student Nurse Omofoyewa John, reinforcing the institution’s tradition of excellence.
