The Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for reconstituting Southern Nigeria Traditional Rulers Council (SNTRC).
Abiodun stated this on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, at the official launching of the council in Owerri, Imo State.
His words, “Amidst current economic challenges, we recognise the efforts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, in implementing necessary reforms, such as the removal of fuel subsidies and support measures for vulnerable populations.
“We urge our youth to engage in constructive dialogue rather than protests, contributing positively to societal development.
“Together, as part of the Southern Governors’ Forum, we pledge our support to this council, aiming for a peaceful and prosperous Nigeria that honours its traditions while embracing the future.”
Abiodun who is also Chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum commended Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State that coordinated the event, saying, “the idea is a significant step towards fostering unity among traditional leaders in Southern Nigeria.
“It’s aimed to unify our rich cultural heritage and strengthen the relationship between traditional institutions and the government.
“Our traditional rulers hold a pivotal role in socio-economic development, serving as custodians of customs and traditions.
“Their advisory role is crucial in shaping policies that affect community development and governance.
“By strengthening the ties between royal institutions and government, we can promote inclusive governance and leverage the diverse cultural heritage for regional growth and stability.”
Abiodun noted that as leaders, “we emphasise the importance of traditional rulers maintaining their non-political status, focusing instead on mediating conflicts and fostering social harmony.
“We call on the council members to engage with their communities, listen to their needs, and work collaboratively to address challenges.”
He said the council provides a platform for sharing ideas and experiences, “enhancing the status and dignity of traditional leadership.”
