IBADAN, OYO STATE, NIGERIA – Oyo State governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, has approved the appointment of Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland.
The governor’s decision, formalized in a memo signed on June 14, 2024, is rooted in several key reasons, backed by the powers conferred on him by Section 19 (Cap 28) Law of Oyo State 2000, as amended.
The approval process adhered to the legal and traditional frameworks governing the ascension to royal thrones in Oyo State.
According to Honourable Olusegun Olayiwola, the State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, the approval was the culmination of a series of processes stipulated by the extant laws of the state.
Oba Olakulehin’s appointment aligns with the Ibadan succession tradition, which mandates the elevation of the most senior individual in the Balogun line.
The Olubadan throne became vacant following the demise of the 42nd Olubadan, Oba Sen Lekan Balogun CFR, Alli Okunmade II, on March 14, 2024, after a brief illness.
Ensuring a smooth transition was crucial for maintaining stability and continuity in Ibadanland. Oba Olakulehin, being the natural successor and the most senior in the Balogun line, was a suitable choice to uphold the traditions and responsibilities of the throne.
Governor Makinde expressed his hope that Oba Olakulehin’s tenure would foster greater development in Ibadanland and Oyo State.
By appointing a leader who is deeply rooted in the local traditions and respected within the community, the governor aims to harness the potential for socio-economic growth and cultural preservation.
Oba Olakulehin’s deep involvement in the cultural heritage of Ibadanland positions him as a guardian of the community’s traditions and values.
His appointment is expected to bolster efforts in preserving and promoting the rich cultural legacy of the region.
Governor Makinde’s approval of Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland is a decision grounded in legal adherence, traditional succession practices, the need for stability, and a vision for development. Oba Olakulehin’s leadership is anticipated to bring about positive changes and uphold the cultural heritage of Ibadanland.
