popOWERRI, IMO STATE, NIGERIA – The Akeredolu family has taken a decision to reintegrate Mrs. Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, widow of the late former governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, into their fold.
Following the passing of Rotimi Akeredolu in December 2023 after a battle with cancer, his widow, Betty, has now been formally handed over to his younger brother, Wole Akeredolu, by her Owerri in-laws.
The traditional Mgbafu Mkpe ceremony for Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu took place on Sunday, March 31, 2024, in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State, where she was handed over to Wole Akeredolu, her late husband’s immediate younger brother.
Prior to the formal handover, customary rituals were observed, including the presentation of kolanuts, palm wine, a she-goat, and food items to the Umuegeolu kindred by the Akeredolus.
Expressing gratitude to the family and community for their hospitality, Prof Wole Akeredolu pledged to continue caring for Betty following the demise of his elder brother, Rotimi Akeredolu.
The former first lady, still in mourning attire, remained silent throughout the ceremony. Attendees included members of the Umuegeolu family, Nde Mgboto Emeabiam (Daughters of the soil), and Oha n’Ikoro Emeabiam (Elders Council).
The Mgbafu Mkpe ceremony, a traditional Igbo ritual, is performed after the demise and burial of a woman’s husband in Igbo land. It involves the husband’s family indicating their willingness to have the widow back in their home, with rituals performed accordingly.
