Why Tinubu Orders Customs To Return Seized Food Items To Owners

KWANGWALAM, MAIADUA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, KATSINA STATE, NIGERIA – The Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, has revealed that President Bola Tinubu has instructed the Nigerian Customs Service (NSC) to return all seized grains to their rightful owners for resale in Nigerian markets.

CGC Adeniyi made this announcement during a stakeholder meeting held in Kwangwalam, a border town in the Maiadua Local Government Area of Katsina State on Saturday, March 9, 2024.

He stated that the directive was issued by the president as part of his compassionate efforts to ensure that citizens have access to affordable food in the markets.

However, Adeniyi emphasized that the confiscated food items would only be returned under the condition that they are sold within Nigerian markets.

“The primary goal is to enhance food security and ensure that Nigerians do not suffer from hunger. Mr. President views this measure as a strategic approach to addressing food security challenges,” he explained.

Adeniyi further noted, “We have seized over 120 trucks loaded with food items earmarked for export, resulting in a significant depletion of food supplies in our markets, which in turn has led to price hikes. Therefore, we anticipate that restocking our markets will positively impact food prices.”

The CGC also took the opportunity to pay visits to former President Muhammadu Buhari at his country home in Daura and the Emir of Daura, Dr. Umar Farouq Umar, in his palace.

During these visits, he was honoured with the traditional title of Mabudin Hausa by the Emir.
