ILARO-YEWA, Ogun State – The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) is a vital Nigerian institution responsible for overseeing the nation’s identity management systems.

Established under Act 23 of 2007, its mandate encompasses the creation, ownership, operation, maintenance, and management of Nigeria’s national identity database.

However, concerns have been raised about the dire state of the NIMC office located in Ilaro-Yewa, the headquarters of Ogun West, prompting attention from the Minister of State of Interior, Mr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

An investigation by StarTrend Int’l magazine uncovered significant deficiencies at the Ilaro-Yewa office.

With only one computer, no functioning Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) system and reliable alternative electricity supply, the office is ill-prepared to handle power outages, compromising its operations.

The current condition of the office is incongruous with its status as a senatorial office of NIMC.

During a recent visit by the StarTrend team to the Ilaro-Yewa office of NIMC, amidst the registration of students for JAMB examinations, the inadequacy of the office was glaring.

Staff worked in an inhospitable environment devoid of basic amenities such as chairs, tables, air conditioning, and proper sanitation facilities.

Applicants were left to endure long waits, either standing for hours or sitting on the bare floor.

As the rainy season approaches, the lack of proper drainage infrastructure poses additional challenges for both staff and applicants at the office.

Fielding questions from StarTrend  crew, numerous applicants expressed dissatisfaction with the office’s operations, advocating for a substantial upgrade.

They emphasized the need for multiple computers and a fully-equipped office complex with amenities like air conditioning, chairs, tables, and comfortable seating arrangements for waiting applicants.

Concerns were also raised about the delay in issuing identity cards to applicants after capturing their information. Many felt that this process shouldn’t entail years of waiting for the original cards.

Against this backdrop, the community urges the Minister to take action. They call for the urgent upgrade of the Ilaro-Yewa NIMC office and similar facilities nationwide, as well as expedited processes for issuing original identity cards to applicants.
