PRESIDENT BOLA AHMED TINUBU of Nigeria

Evaluating Tinubu’s Political Sincerity

Opinion:

Nigerians, particularly the Yorubas, might be overlooking the true nature of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu (BAT) amidst the criticism of his eight-month-old presidency.

His sincerity as a politician was largely assumed during the lead-up to the 2023 general elections.

Tinubu’s significant role in Lagos State’s politics over eight years as Executive Governor, leaving a lasting legacy and establishing a political dynasty, served as the foundation for his presidential campaign in 2023.

In 2015, Tinubu endorsed former President Muhammad Buhari, presenting him as the solution to Nigeria’s challenges, including Boko Haram, corruption, and economic issues.

However, during Buhari’s tenure from 2015 to 2023, challenges like banditry, kidnapping, terrorism, and unresolved killings persisted.

In 2023, Tinubu emerged as a new political figure promising to continue Buhari’s legacy.

However, within eight months of his presidency, the country witnessed an escalation in kidnappings, killings of traditional rulers in the South, and unprecedented incidents of abduction in regions previously unaffected.

Tinubu’s government mirrored Lagos’ economic strategies, particularly taxation, at the national level. However, the abrupt policy shifts resulted in economic turmoil, increased suffering, hunger, and poverty among Nigerians.

The question arises: who is accountable for this political outcome? Is it the pursuit of power, voters’ lack of honesty in their choices, or the flawed structure of our political system that prioritizes appearances over substance?

Moving forward, it is imperative to advocate for government policies that address the nation’s challenges comprehensively.

Truth remains uncolored and constant.
