LAGOS – As Abdul Kolawole Imoyo, the late Head of Corporate Communication at Access Holdings Group, bids his final farewell, emotions overflow with tears and encomiums.
During the burial service, Pastor Sola Olawuyi of the RCCG, Olive Tree Parish, Banana Island, Lagos , Victoria Island, Lagos, delivered a heartfelt sermon, advising people to recognize that death does not give prior notice and encouraging them to do good while still alive.
Drawing inspiration from scriptures, including Psalm 30:11, Ecclesiastes 7:1, and John 14-27, Pastor Olawuyi emphasized the inevitability of death and the divine determination of one’s days on earth.
The cleric underscored the importance of every day in life, urging individuals to make each day count in their journey.
She highlighted that living long is not a prerequisite for making a positive impact, encouraging everyone to use their opportunities for the benefit of others and humanity.
Pastor Olawuyi celebrated Abdul Imoyo as a man of the people who left a positive impact on lives, saying, “Abdul’s love for humanity, genuine care, and dedication to God were evident in every testimony shared about him.
Abdul Imoyo’s good works and love for humanity were recognized during the burial service as mourners remembered him as a compassionate individual who displayed love and care.
Pastor Olawuyi emphasized the uncertainty of the time of departure and urged everyone to be prepared for the inevitable end, reiterating the need to be remembered for positive deeds.
The burial service, held at the RCCG, Olive Tree Parish, Banana Island, Lagos drew sympathizers from various locations, including Mr. Hebert Wigwe, the GMD of Access Bank Holding Group.
At the Service of Songs, Wigwe expressed disbelief at Abdul’s sickness and lamented his untimely death, describing it as a significant loss to Access Bank Holdings.
Mr. Ramon Olanrewaju Nasir, Head of Media and External Relations, United Bank of Africa Plc, spoke fondly of Abdul Imoyo’s impact during his time at UBA, emphasizing their close relationship.
He lamented Abdul’s passing at the peak of his career, but acknowledged that God knows best.
Mr. Rasheed Bolarinwa, President of Association of Corporate and Marketing Communications Professionals in Banks in Nigeria (ACAMB), expressed condolences on behalf of the association, acknowledging the devastating news and highlighting Abdul’s impact on ACAMB.
He urged everyone to keep Abdul’s family in their prayers during this challenging time.
Abdul Kolawole Imoyo, a seasoned journalist and corporate media manager, left a lasting legacy of exceptionalism, love, passion, generosity, and professionalism.
His untimely departure on December 17, 2023, at 01:48 hrs, marked the end of a remarkable life that touched many hearts.
The two event was attended by dignitaries from far and near. They include Mr. Herbert Wigwe, CEO, Access Corporation; Dr. (Mrs.) Ajoritsedere Awosika, former Chairman, Access Bank Plc; MD/CEO of Access Bank, Mr. Roosevelt Ogbonna; Mr. Sunday Ekwochi, Group Company Secretary, Access Holdings and members of ACAMB led by its President- Mr. Rasheed Bolarinwa.
Others are Elhadj (Chief) AbuSatar Idowu Hamed, Publisher/Editor-in-Chief, StarTrend Int’l magazine and online; Mr. Ramon Olanrewaju Nasir, Head of Media and External Relations, United Bank of Africa Plc; Managing Director/Editor–in–Chief, New Telegraph, Mr. Ayodele Aminu; members of Celebrity Journal Publishers’ Association of Nigeria (CJPAN; colleagues of the deceased from Access Bank and other top Nigerian Bankers were there to give their last respect.
Born on January 31, 1971, in Apata Ganga, Ibadan City Council, later renamed Ibadan Municipal Government (IMG) Area of Oyo State, Abdul Kolawole Imoyo emerged as the sixth child among nine siblings to late Pa Saibu and Alhajja Fatimetu Imoyo. His roots traced back to Agbede, Etsako West Local Government area of Edo State.
Abdul’s early aspirations led him to desire admission to Government College, Apata, Ibadan (GCI). However, fate redirected him to Abadina College, University of Ibadan (UI).
Despite initial disappointment, Abdul embraced his time at Abadina, forming bonds with childhood friends, mostly GCI boys from Apata Ganga.
This experience ignited Abdul’s quest to break barriers, surmount obstacles, and rewrite stories, aiming to democratize access to privileges.
Popular among friends, his dream of leaving Nigeria mirrored those who had privileged backgrounds and left after secondary school.
Devoting considerable time to this dream, Abdul faced challenges and late starts in continuing education and life in Nigeria.
After multiple unsuccessful attempts to travel abroad, Abdul moved from Ibadan to Lagos, residing with his eldest brother, Mr. & Mrs. Tunde Imoyo.
He earned a Diploma in Journalism from the Nigeria Institute of Journalism (NIJ) Lagos, a Bachelor of Science in Public Administration from Lagos State University (LASU) in 2002, and an MBA from the University of Lagos in 2014.
Abdul’s professional journey commenced at Vanguard Newspaper as a Business Reporter, evolving to Deputy Business Editor by 2002. In May 2006, he joined BusinessDay Newspapers, rising to Finance Editor.
Departing in July 2010, Abdul transitioned to United Bank of Africa (UBA) Plc as a Media Relations Officer. His tenure at UBA lasted until August 2014, when he joined Access Bank Plc as Head, PR & Media Relations at Access Corporation.
At Access Corporation, Abdul played a pivotal role in implementing short-and-long-term PR strategies, exhibiting dedication, passion, and devotion to his job.
Beyond his professional life, Abdul was known for his sociability, familiarity with social spots, and a flair for fashion.
In his youth, he excelled in soccer, playing as a striker for neighborhood football clubs and participating in local tournaments within Ibadan metropolis. In later years, he developed a profound passion for golf.
Abdul actively engaged in numerous professional and social associations, leaving an indelible mark. Notable roles include membership in Black Table, a social club, former Vice Chairman of Capital State Correspondent Association of Nigeria (CAMCAN), and, until his passing, the Publicity Secretary of the Association of Corporate and Marketing Communications Professionals in Banks in Nigeria (ACAMB).
Generosity defined Abdul’s character. His benevolence touched many lives, sponsoring education for numerous individuals. As a mentor, he sought to transform lives and provide platforms for the less-privileged to pursue their dreams.
A lover of music and an art collector, Abdul’s home became a gallery showcasing beautiful artwork from famous Nigerian painters.
In his role as a family man and a loving father, Abdul married Folasade on August 14, 2004. The couple had three children – Morayo (18), Timilehin (16), and Teniola (13).
Abdul Kolawole Imoyo’s life serves as a testament to the impact of humility, resilience, and generosity. His legacy shines brightly in the hearts of those privileged to know him.
As we bid farewell during the Service of Songs and Final Burial Service, Abdul’s exemplary character leaves a lasting imprint.
May his soul rest in eternal peace, bringing solace to hearts that weep.
