ABUJA – In a unanimous decision, a five-member panel of the Supreme Court on Friday, January 19, 2024, dismissed the appeal filed by Oladipupo Adebutu, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the last Ogun State governorship election.
Reading the judgment, Justice Tijjani Abubakar, stated that Adebutu and his party failed to substantiate their case, resolving all raised issues against the appellants, saying the appeal was deemed without merit and subsequently dismissed.
Justice Abubakar affirmed Governor Dapo Abiodun as the duly elected governor, concluding, “In the end, this appeal is unmeritorious and deserves to be dismissed. It is hereby dismissed.”
Recalling the March 2023 election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Governor Dapo Abiodun the winner with 276,298 votes, while Ladi Adebutu of the PDP scored 262,38, and Biyi Otegbeye of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) came third with 94,754 votes.
Following the Supreme Court’s ruling, Governor Abiodun expressed gratitude, saying, “To God be the Glory! Having navigated through the intricate phases of the election petition tribunal, we can proudly proclaim that the Supreme Court has resoundingly affirmed our triumph.”
He acknowledged the trust placed in his administration by the people of Ogun State and pledged a dedicated effort toward creating a society marked by prosperity and harmony.”
