OWODE-EGBA, OGUN STATE – Oba Kolawole Sowemimo, the Olu Owode Egba in Obafemi Owode local government area of Ogun State, has apologized to the public outcry over his apparent abuse of Nigeria currency notes during his wife’s 60th birthday celebration.
In a viral video, Oba Sowemimo had adorned popular Fuji musician, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshall, with a garland made of 1,000 naira notes.
The incident sparked outrage on social media, leading to an apology from the monarch to the federal government.
In response, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) dispatched a letter to Oba Sowemimo, warning of potential imprisonment for his actions, citing Section 21 (3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act 2007.
In his defense, Oba Sowemimo expressed regret for his actions, pledging to refrain from such behavior in the future.
He attributed his conduct to being ‘carried away with the celebration of my wife,’ emphasizing that the excitement of the occasion triggered his lapse in judgment.
Despite the controversy, Oba Sowemimo conveyed his remorse and affirmed his commitment to adhering to national symbols and cultural norms, assuring that such incidents would not recur again.
