General Prince Adekunle, hailing from Egba-Abeokuta in Ogun State, emerged as a prominent and innovative figure in the world of jùjú music.
His distinct AfroJuju-infused style set him apart as a musical force to be reckoned with.
Over a career that spanned more than four decades, General Prince Adekunle released a remarkable 15 albums, leaving an indelible mark on the industry.
He initially formed his band, known as “Prince Adekunle & his Western State Brothers,” in the 1970s, later changing the name to “General Prince Adekunle & his Supersonic Sounds.”
Notably, influential musicians such as Sir Shina Peters and Segun Adewale launched their careers by performing with General Prince Adekunle’s band – the Western Brothers. His mentorship and support played a pivotal role in shaping the careers of these two prominent Nigerian music stars of the 1980s.
General Prince Adekunle’s repertoire included hits like “Aiye Nreti Eleya,” “Awodi Nfo Soke,” “You Tell Me that You Love Me,” “Omo Niyi Omo Nide,” “Aditu Ede,” “Eniyan Soro,” and “Awa Lomo Ibile Nigeria,” among many others.
Sadly, this juju music legend passed away on September 2, 2017, at the age of 75. However, his legacy continues to resonate in the hearts of music enthusiasts, and his contributions to the jùjú music genre remain significant and cherished.
