Oba Dele Odugbemi, the Olu of Lisa Agbado Ifo, has issued a strong statement, urging people to refrain from incorrectly labeling former President Olusegun Obasanjo as an Igbo man.
Oba Odugbemi clarified, saying, “Baba Obasanjo is a genuine descendant of Owu in Abeokuta. His mother hails from Pakoto, and his father’s roots are in Ibogun Olaogun, both of which are Owu villages within the Ifo local government area of Ogun State. His entire family has deep Owu connections within the city of Abeokuta.”
He emphasized, “I have personally interacted with numerous residents from his village and members of his family compound in Owu, Abeokuta over the years. I am aware of his cousins residing in Owu, Abeokuta. In fact, one of his first cousins is also related to my family in Igbore township of Abeokuta.”
Oba Odugbemi shed light on Obasanjo’s personality, stating, “Obasanjo has always held a strong sense of self and self-interest, which might explain his singular focus on his own beliefs and ideas.”
Oba Odugbemi went on to describe Owu people as resilient and resolute, often unyielding in their pursuits, even if it comes at the expense of others.
He highlighted a common Owu saying, “UN GBAUN,” which translates to “I will never accept that,” illustrating their determination.
The monarch also noted, “Owu people are known for their prudence, often regarded as the most frugal among the various indigenous tribes in Egbaland. Owu has been blessed with numerous accomplished individuals within the Egbaland.”
