ABEOKUTA – The leadership of Cooperative Societies and Unions in Ogun State need to maintain good conduct and be vigilant in order not to accommodate members that can cause discord among them, the State Commissioner for Community Development and Cooperatives, Hon. Ganiyu Hamzat has said.
Hon. Hamzat who made this call during a-day capacity building workshop organised by the Ministry, with the theme: ‘Engaging the Essential Work of Care for Cooperative Members’ at Itori, in Ewekoro Local Government Area, emphasised that cooperative movement is too important for socio-economic growth than to be managed just anyhow.
Hamzat described Cooperative societies as economic tool for growth and nation’s development, saying its established rules and regulations should be adhered to at all times, assuring that government would not relent in its efforts at ensuring their smooth running.
The Commissioner stated that the objective of the workshop was to further enlighten participants on the need for better management strategies, in order to enhance wellbeing and promote unity among members, advising them to uphold ethical values.
Also speaking, the Director, Cooperative Services, Mr. Samuel Mustapha, said functions of cooperative societies go beyond obtaining loan, urging members to imbibe the culture of saving and complement government’s drive to improve people’s standard of living.
Contributing, the Principal, Ogun State Cooperative College, Mr. Fattah Ibrahim, underscored the importance of cooperative societies which include self-help and harmonious relationship among members, urging members to always speak up when dissatisfied about issues.
Responding, one of the participants, Mrs. Aisha Ahmed said the workshop would impact positively on the management and administration of cooperative societies, imploring co-participants to utilise knowledge gained from the workshop.
