By Raymomd Osho

ABEOKUTA – Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, Prof. Adewale Musa-Olomu on Saturday, November 21, 2020 decried inadequate medical personnel in the country’s health sector.

To end this deficiency, Olomu advocated for the funding of medical schools by making provision for more teaching facilities across the institutions in the country to train more medical students.

Olomu made this known while delivering his speech at the 2020 World Television Day, organised by the Consolidated Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Abeokuta, the state capital.

The Medical expert who spoke on the theme; “Building A Post-Covid-19 In Nigeria”, regretted that most Nigerian medical institutions could not admit more than 50 students due to insufficient teaching facilities to train students.

His words, “If you bring 50 doctors to FMC for instance, it will be of not effect even with the ones we have already. Government should fund the educational sector. 26 percent of every country’s budget has been recommended by the United Nations (UN) for the educational sector.

“If government pumps that percentage into the sector, we will have enough classrooms, adequate facilities, employ enough lecturers, and of course, the narrative will change.”

He however challenged religious leaders to contribute one percent of their tithing towards boosting the primary health system across the country.

The Director who decried the decaying state of primary health facilities in different local government of the state told Muslim and Christian faithful in the state to join the government in the move to boost the system by renovating primary health centers in their communities.

Prof. Olomu also appeal to the state government to renovate all existing primary health facilities in the state which are in critical condition, instead of building new ones.
